4 Tips For Staying Safe Online

With so many online scams, you can never be too safe when browsing the internet. Today, the internet can be a downright risky place, so it’s important to take the right safety measures at all times. Although the risks may be plentiful, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue enjoying and making use of the wonderful tool that is the internet. By taking these basic safety precaution measures and staying alert, you can prevent the risk of online threats.

Use a Firewall

Many internet users make the mistake of believing that just because they have a secure network, they don’t need a firewall.— Not the case. Even with a secure network, you’ll need a firewall that functions as protection from unauthorized access to your information. When you use a firewall, you add extra security to your network and devices that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Always make sure that you check your computer settings to see whether your firewall is enabled. You may be surprised that even with a computer protection program, your firewall may not be protected by default.

Create Complex Passwords

One of the easiest ways to allow hackers into your system is to create easy-to-guess, non-complex passwords. The key to creating a good password is to choose something random that has nothing to do with common facts about you. For example, if your password has something to do with your date of birth, the name of your pet, or the street you live on, then you need to switch things up. Remember, hackers know the most common passwords that people choose. All they need to know is a little information about you to easily guess how to get in.

Be Cautious About What You Share

Nowadays, social media has become such a normal part of life that people fail to stop to think about what they’re actually sharing with the world. When you post a picture of your home, for example, consider what’s in the image. If it includes your street name and your house number, then you’re putting yourself at risk. Be selective about what you share—whether it’s photographs or your personal information like birthday and phone number. As much as you might like to believe people are good, there are people out there browsing with the sole intent of committing crimes.

Check Your Privacy Settings

Whether it’s social media or your email, you should always make sure that you get to know your privacy settings. Usually, the default settings aren’t quite as strenuous as they should be. Make sure that your posts are set to private and that your sensitive information is visible only to you and not the general public.
