Top Tips for Staying Healthy in Winter

As soon as the cold wintery weather sets in its comfort food and chocolate that we’re all dreaming of, but if we suddenly change our diets, we can slip into unhealthy routines that are hard to budge. Whilst you can say yes to the odd hot chocolate or mince pie, you don’t want to spend your whole-time binge eating on the carby food just because it’s cold and wet outside. Continue reading to find out how you can enjoy winter but stay healthy at the same time.

Get Your 5 a Day

Winter is an essential time to ensure you’re having all of your 5 a day, not only because it’s healthy but it will help to keep your immune system strong. Whether you invest in your own cold frame like these to start your own vegetable growing, or you stock up in the supermarket every week, it’s essential to get your 5 a day and stick to a routine within your diet. You’ll also find that consuming your 5 a day will help to keep you feeling fresh and awake, as the nutrients will fuel your body in the very best way.

Fighting Flu

If you work in an office, you’ll appreciate just how frustrating it is once one person catches the flu. The flu is a bug that spreads like wildfire and if you don’t keep yourself strong and healthy, you’ll end up catching it in an instant. Whilst you can’t avoid flu completely, there are things you can do to keep it at bay, even if only for a short period of time. The most important thing to remember is to stay hydrated and eat plenty. If you find yourself with the flu, make sure you drink enough water each day to help flush out the bug and get you on the path to good health. Flu can be really tough and set you back in bed for days, so you may want to look at getting the flu jab too just to be on the safe side.

Do an Online Shop

Walking around the supermarket when you’re hungry and tired is the worst thing you can do when trying to stick to a healthy diet. The moment you see those delicious, warm cookies you’ll instantly cave and find yourself piling up the trolley with things you really don’t need. By doing an online shop, you can monitor exactly what you’re buying without the added temptation of the sweet isle, as well as save a little money by having full access to all special offers right in front of you. It’s also much easier when it comes to the evenings, as you can rest assured you already have the food and don’t need to nip to the shop for anything, meaning more time at home staying cosy and warm! Some of the best places to shop for your online order are Sainsburys and Ocado, but there are also some great online food stores such as Hello Fresh that deliver you exactly what you need for certain recipes, resulting in even less waste.

Avoid Comfort Eating

Similar to the above, one of the hardest but most important things to do during winter is avoid comfort eating. Comfort eating is a slippery slope and once you start, it’s hard to shop. From the odd Starbucks hot chocolate to slices of cake and pie, it can almost become habit to eat naughty foods to make yourself feel better, which in turn you’ll feel worse about. Instead, try to limit yourself to a day or two of treats, perhaps on the weekend, so you’re still getting the sweet fix without having to go overboard.
