Chairman Kashmir Council EU Ali Raza Syed has welcomed a recent report by the European Parliamentary Research Service on India’s controversial policies, especially the mistreatment of the people of Occupied Kashmir and the mistreatment of minorities in India.
The report, prepared by the research staff of the European Parliament, says that in recent months, especially since the Modi government has returned to power in India, a situation has arisen in which Hindu nationalism has had an impact on society and state policies.
The report says that after the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was abolished last year, the Modi government of India has introduced a controversial citizenship law which has promoted division and protest in Indian society and in particular, the act of granting citizenship on the basis of religion has endangered India’s traditional secularism. This has further increased the fear of prejudice against them, especially in the Muslim community.
The report clearly states that tensions in Delhi escalated in late February this year, killing 53 people and increasing the trend of violence against religious minorities.
Last year, the World Press Freedom Index highlighted the rise in violence against journalists in India, which gives an idea of the current state of press freedom in India.
The European report on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir also referred to the reports of the UN Commissioner for Human Rights in 2018 and 2019, which criticized the indiscriminate use of force by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.
The European research report says that since India abolished the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August last year, India has increased its forces in the occupied valley and imprisoned thousands of political leaders and workers. Phone and internet were suspended and basic services were taken away from the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The report indicates that the new laws pose a major threat to the population of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the domicile law has been changed.
Chairman Kashmir Council EU Ali Raza Syed while welcoming the report of the European Parliamentary Research Service said that this report is based on facts. This report is significant as it clearly confirms the decades-long atrocities on Kashmiris.
Ali Raza Syed said that the Indian government was not only persecuting Kashmiris on a large scale but now even the minorities of India were not safe from its atrocities and state violence.
Chairman Kashmir Council EU called on the international community, especially the United Nations and the European Union, to stop atrocities against India.
On the Kashmir issue, Ali Raza Syed said that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory and the international community should play its just role for a peaceful and lasting solution to the Kashmir dispute.
