Was The Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki A War Crime?

World War II was the most cataclysmic event in world history. There were far-reaching consequences, including the loss of 30 million lives among thirty countries involved in the global conflict. However, not many countries suffered losses as severely as the island country of Japan. The devastation experienced by the Japanese was in no small part due to the events that changed modern war forever; these occurred in August of 1945. The aforementioned event was the dropping of two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, and wiping out an unthinkable population, including 250,000 lives. While there are some historians and people in general that believe that the United States was egregious in their reaction to the failure of Japan’s surrender, this was a response to aggression from the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor, and their refusal to end the war against America. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were no more a war crime than any other major battle that occurred during World War II. It was a necessary response to save a greater number of lives that would be lost due to battle.

There are historians that acknowledge that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not important factors influencing Japan’s suing for peace in World War II. During 1945 Japan was suffering heavy losses as a result of their fighting in the Pacific. The Japanese Navy was devastated by the Allied strategy, and the Russians, whom the Japanese thought would not be a factor for them, amazingly began to push back the German forces. Many historians believe that the potential Russian advance into Japan was a much more important factor in the Japanese surrender. For an act of war to be construed as a war crime, you would assume the act would be so egregious it would move a country to surrender. The Japanese did not even mention the atomic bombings during early negotiations. Although the Japan bombings were unnecessary and egregious, they could not be considered a war crime.
