Introduction
Health insurance is not something to take for granted. A lot of people have it, and some of us cannot afford to buy into something, even something cheap. You might be one of the lucky ones who can afford to buy quality Australian health insurance or likewise.
Keeping that in mind I have a few suggestions on what you should consider before choosing to enroll.
1)The Network Doctors
Some doctors may be in your network, while others are not. That can an issue if you have to pick a new doctor, leaving behind the one you have used for the last several years, especially when you are changing policies.
I advise you to check with the company to make sure your current doctor can still be used. I had to learn that mistake the hard way. Some patients find it more feasible to pay the extra costs for insurance if they can keep the same doctor they have always used.
2)The Benefits
Some plans will come with excellent benefits that you can trust, others will not. That is why it is important to weigh the pros and cons before choosing a plan. Once more, you may be better off paying more each month for the benefits you will receive.
What are your current needs, including therapy and medications? I had to switch plans, many years ago, because the plan did not include cost-effective therapy. I had to make a choice. I could either go without therapy or get better. You might have to make that choice too.
3)Different Types
Do you remember Dr Suess kids’ Book about the different types of feet? The book provided an excellent analysis of how no two situations are the same. You are going to run across different types of health insurance, as you will different kinds of feet.
You need to make the right choice for you and your family, whether it is a PPO or an HMO. Go over the summary list for each choice. You might have to sacrifice a bonus to make room for what you deem necessary.
4)Medications and Prescriptions
If you are like most of the foreigners, the cost of a prescription has increased through the years. Australians pay 159% more than Americans for fast-moving consumable goods, or everyday items. However, you might have noticed that even the generic medications have increased in price too. I would not shrug this off so quickly. You might need those medications someday.
That is why I suggest you look at the drug program for each plan. Make sure the drugs you require are on the list. The last thing you want is to pay extra money for a drug that should have been included anyway.
5)Forgoing Insurance
Younger men and women sometimes choose to forgo insurance because they feel they are too young and healthy. I can tell you, from personal experience, that is not the way to go. I spent a lot of my 20s in and out of the emergency room. I had been diagnosed with several medical conditions, including asthma, GERD, and other upper respiratory issues. I still face these issues today, and I will for the rest of my life. The insurance I had covered some of the expenses, but not everything.
You may be young, but that does not mean you are healthy. Learn from the story. Invest in some type of health insurance. You might need it someday.
6)Extra Costs
Factor in the extra costs. They will increase depending on how much you use their services.
