4 Things to Know Before Marrying a Foreigner

Marrying a Foreigner

It’s a scenario many of us know all too well from the movies. An American tourist goes on vacation to an idyllic location and ends up meeting the man or woman of their dreams. Falling in love abroad is nothing new. In fact, statistics show that one-fifth of American households have a foreign-born husband or wife. The truth is while it’s perfectly possible to have your happily ever after, there are plenty of challenges that come along with it. The best chance you have of making the relationship work is preparing yourself as much as possible. If you are an American with intentions of marrying a foreigner, then here are some of the things that you should know first.

Get a Lawyer

Although DIY is the latest craze in 2021, whether you’re painting a cupboard, or selling a house, it’s definitely not recommended for immigration. There are all sorts of complex laws and procedures, so if you want to make sure that everything is done correctly, you should schedule a consultation with an immigration lawyer. They’ll be able to explain how the process works, and what you can expect if you wind up getting divorced.

Some people are surprised to find that attempting to get their foreign fiancé into the country is tremendously more difficult than they anticipated. That’s why an immigration lawyer is absolutely crucial to ensure your chances of success.

Decide Where You’ll Get Married

Before you start sending out wedding invitations, you should decide where you plan on getting married. The United States does not recognize marriage certificates from every country. So, if you decide to get married in your spouse’s country, make sure that your marriage certificate will be valid back home.

Don’t Rush Into Anything

A lot of new couples are so eager to be together that they move very quickly towards marriage. Even though you may not love the idea of having to travel back and forth to see each other in the beginning, you’re better off taking your time. Marrying a foreigner can be much more complex than marrying an American. Waiting a few extra months, or even years may seem like forever, but taking your time may save you a world of trouble that you may have otherwise found yourself in by rushing into marriage.

Save Money

Make no mistake about it— marriage itself is expensive regardless of who you marry! However, there are additional costs that come along with marrying a foreigner— like paying for a lawyer and visa fees. Before you dive in, make sure that you have a clear understanding of all of the costs involved and save money for as long as possible. Remember, in most cases, your spouse won’t be able to work immediately when they come to the United States. So make sure that you anticipate having to support them until they are able to legally get a job.
