Final Fantasy Versus XIII Cancelled? Not So Fast.

“Rumors of my demise…”

Another day, another Final Fantasy related rumor.

Kotaku is reporting that over 6 years after it was announced Final Fantasy Versus XIII development has officially ended.

Citing an unknown ’source’,  Kotaku stated the following hours ago:

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was officially cancelled within the last few weeks. The decision impacted morale at Square Enix and staff were reportedly saddened by the move.

While Sqaure Enix does have a track record this gen for not publically confirming a game’s fate, see The Last Remnant for PS3, other insiders are crying foul to Kotaku’s claim.

Senior US Editor for RPGSite.net ( and a resourceful source for all things Square Enix ) Erren Van Duine responded to the rumor on Neogaf, stating that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is alive and kicking and will be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.

[The Kotaku rumor] goes against information I was told quite recently, which was that Nomura is hard at work on the game and something of it will be shown at TGS.
Conflicting reports from different sources isn’t enough to prove or disprove anything as far as Final Fantasy Versus XIII is concerned. In the end of the day, it’s ultimately up to Square Enix to put these rumors to rest. And with the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary taking place before the TGS, perhaps we won’t have long to wait before the fate of FFVsXIII is known.

I’m with Stealth, Kotaku is a load of shit and shouldn’t be taken seriously by anyone. I feel sorry for the people who believe what that site says. (Really, all their content is either fake or unfairly biased.)

From a point I agree with stealth, but from another point SE has been kinda lazy this generation. They released Star Ocean 4 and Nier a long time ago and FF XIII, after that FF XIII-2 ( a sequel that no one actually asked for ) and lately people use the name SE because of Eidos/Io Deus Ex/Tomb Raider/Hitman. I was expecting a bit more from them this generation, I don’t know it seems kinda poor. Even at E3 if it wasn’t for Eidos/Io they didn’t had anything to show…well Heroes of Ruin and that puzzle game. Kotaku maybe full of shit but so is everybody else if you ask me. o.O and let’s not forget about the failed FF XV that even now are struggling with it. In the end if this dirty trick will push SE into making an announcement or even show something I will be happy.
As for the Last Remnant, don’t know what to say because the game didn’t do very good on the Xbox/PC ( I think they picked the wrong audience ) so I don’t know what pushes them into releasing this game to PS3 after all this game. If it happens I will be happy, but I doubt it.

I will admit, I haven’t looked at kotaku much since their incredibly smug review of dragon’s dogma. but the first thing that comes to mind here was the rumor about the playstation Orbis. That said, put me firmly in the camp of “official statement or GTFO” with this rumor. The info presented gives me too much of a reasonable doubt to believe it, and the fact that it being eaten up this much is unspurising, given certain confirmation biases. (not trying to start anything with regard to SE’s performance this generation, but I can’t help but sense a bit of a confirmation bias since the PS2 days).

Over tweeter SE CEO Wada posted:

“Someone has been spreading a false rumor that Versus has been canceled, it seems,” Wada tweeted. “[Laughs.] Just now, we finished our regular Versus meeting. If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet.”

So by the look of it Versus is still up and running, maybe we will get some insight on the 1st of September.
