Resistance was the first game to cross the million sold mark when it launched along side the PS3 in 2006. Nearly five years later Insomniac Games is working on the third and what could be the studio’s final Resistance title. Insomniac’s creative director Marcus Smith recently told GamingUnion that the studio isn’t “slated to do” a fourth game in the series. He compared Resistance to the Spyro the Dragon games, in which Insomniac dropped after the release of the third game.
“I think Insomniac has always branched out. I loved the Spyro the Dragon series when [Insomniac] did that. I didn’t work there at the time, and I was bummed when they didn’t work on the fourth game, but ultimately, I think it was healthy for them to move on. I think that’s what we’re seeing here,” Marcus Smith said.
“ We’ve done Resistance 3 and we’re really into it and proud of it, but we’re not currently slated to do a Resistance 4. So it would be hard to say it’s any kind of lynchpin within Insomniac. I think we’re thriving and branching out in a lot of different directions.”
So what’s next for Resistance if Insomniac is ready to pass the torch?
No one can say for sure but with the upcoming release of Burning Skies for the Vita, Smith believes the future is still bright for the series. Smith is also confident that if IG’s future doesn’t involve new Resistance games, Sony won’t put the franchise in the hands of someone who will “screw it up.”
