As many of us know the Final Fantasy series is a long running one with Final Fantasy VII considered as one of the best, if not THE best, rpgs to ever grace a console. Most fans of the classic are calling for a PS3 remake of the game.
Those calls have gotten even louder since FFVII recently became avaialble for purchase via PSN. Square Enix has responded with several different reason why they consider a remake of the game to be impossible. I ,for one, hope Square Enix sticks with their guns and ignore fanboys’ pleads for a remake of FFVII. Why? I’ll give you three reasons.
#3. Development time
Square Enix is notoriously slow in developing Final Fantasy games. If they started on a remake this year I can see the following 3-5 years being scattered with the occasional release of CG trailers and limited number of screenshots at the usual big events as well as behind closed doors. Besides, if I want to see Cloud and the gang in full next gen graphics I’ll pop in my copy of FFVII: Advent Children.
#2. Change

If Square Enix does decide to milk FFVII with a remake then there’s a chance that the company may favor making alot of changes to the menu heavy battle system. Taking turns bonking an enemy over the head was never a problem for rpgs during the PS1 and PS2 generation but nowadays everything’s got to be fast paced and simplistic. FFXIII being an example of that.
To be fair the Final Fantasy series doesn’t have an assigned team to work exclusively on the games so the chances that the ones responsible for FFXIII working on a FFVII remake are slim. With that being said there are very few members left at Square Enix who worked on FFVII back when the company was called Square Soft. So one way or another a FFVII remake could be left in the hands of a new team who may decide to update the game engine for the sake of attracting a “new audience.”
#1. And the number one reason I do not want a FFVII remake is because the game is a Masterpiece.

Say what you will about FFVII but we can all agree that no one to this day has produced an rpg with such an involving, character driven story . Not even Square Enix. I’ve come to consider the title a fluke because of this fact.
Everything came together in FFVII. From the story, the music, the villains, the heroes, the plot twists, the game world…everything seamed together creating the best rpg experience I’ve ever had in my gaming lifetime and one I don’t expect to ever have again.
Allowing someone to remake FFVII will be like handing a random person off the street a paint brush and telling him/her to replicate the Mona Lisa. No matter how close to the original it may look it will never be the same. I personally do not want anyone trying to replicate FFVII.
I can live with the CG movie adaptions, the prequels and spin offs made for handheld systems , the guest appearances in other games… Just please,Square Enix, do this fan a favor and DONOT REMAKE FFVII.

Just don’t.
I kinda agree. well, IMO the best final fantasy is still FF-X but FF-VII was also very good. but I don’t really need a remake, I can live with the cool original.
I agree with you all the way. I still have my copy of FFVII and I sometimes play the game and I still enjoy the game despite the PS1 graphics. Then again, I’m a guy that pick gameplay over graphics.
Kill Yourself.Everyone wants it regardless
3 – deveopment time
this isnt any reason to not make a remake. all games have development time. so reason no. 3 is a bit of a fail on ur part
2 – change
this is something that is agreeable. but they can always just make the game without any changes to gameplay or content, just change the graphics so today’s gamers can enjoy a rpg they missed back in 97 with PS3′s graphics.
3 – masterpiece
ur arguement about a random guy off the street to replicate mona lisa is really lame.
today’s square enix isnt the same squaresoft from the 90′s, but that doesnt mean they are unskilled and untalented. so u cannot compare them to a random guy off the street.
if u have a top modern day skilled painter to go replicate mona lisa, im sure they can replicate it to a point where the general public wouldnt be able to notice much of a difference.
* and to close, if u dont want to play the remake of a FF7, than dont play it. but u dont have to go nuts about it, and hope that square enix will never make one. cuz the rest of us wants to play a remake.
Square Enix said so themselves recreating the world of FFVII would be a huge and long task for them on HD systems.
They would either have to make the game for the Wii or handhelds if they want to cut down on development time and cost. If they make it for the PS360 then I can see them taking the easy route and changing ALOT of things that was found in the original game.
And just because alot of people are calling for a remake doesn’t mean they’re going to like the end results. If they choose to “modernize” the gaming experiance to appeal to a “wider audiance” I definatly won’t be buying it.
I believe their will most likely be a Final Fantasy VII: Remake! Please let me explain why.
Final Fantasy VII has been a fan favorite in alot of our minds and to some, the best RPG ever made by human hands since most of us played it back in 1997. I, myself, am a huge fan of Final Fantasy VII. I believe alot of us can agree Square-Enix does not hold up to their older name, “Squaresoft”. That being said, I would like to point out Final Fantasy XII and XIII were drastically different from their predersecors, (spelling check you english freaks!) the new battle system being the biggest change. Alot of us may be able to recall, with Final Fantasy XII, Square-Enix change their battle system to suit newcomers to the series. Square-Enix felt the new, fast paced system would attract more “hardcore” gamers. (Psshhh) Omg I’m typing this on my phone… Ya sure I can understand the team giving it a try, but how many of us really “appreciated” the new system in Final Fantasy XII?… Hell, even the battle system in Final Fantasy XIII was still pretty bad. (Better then Final Fantasy XII IMO)
Now to me, it seems that SE was passing these new battle systems to truly attract the original and new fans… or maybe SE was trying to attract new fans to get alittle extra something else (cha-ching)
Tetsuya Nomura has had a couple interviews recently. I’m getting sick of typing on this phone so…. I’m going to wrap this up. Hopefully…
So tetsuya had an interview regarding Kingdom hearts: BbS, and mentioned that apparently “Zack Fair is the only Final Fantasy VII Character (or so the translation said) and tetsuya mentions that all the other final fantasy VII character were being worked on a different project which hasn’t been announced yet”
Also he had another interview with another website regarding general talking, Kingdom hearts, agito, versus, whatever. The interviewer asked him what games/things to look forward to in 2010. Tetsuya replied somewhat like this, “Well we have yet to announce it but, we’ve been asked all around the world for this during my travels.” it was much more in depth then that obviously lol. So I believe this E3 may be it. But also think about it! I’m sure SE has thought about how much money they could possibly get from this remake. So production budget IMO is the bestest thing they need to worry about. That being said, I’m almost positive this “remake” (if not sequel) could be a little “underdeveloped” IMO unless they truly do take a long time to make it. But I believe I can speak for alot of us. We would just want a great remake, we don’t care how long it takes you or how much money you loss by making it THAT much cooler, we just want a remake! (NOT a SEQUEL) (Im sure they wouldn’t allowing loading money to be in their budget….. But maybe just this once! It’s a long shot)
My main point is FF2+FF4-10 were great! Enix came around, mistwalker Corp. happened, now square bought eidos (eidos is irrelevent though lol) the company just isn’t what it used to be, Squaresoft. I believe Final Fantasy VII will have a HD Remake or Sequel……. Just for the money, even if that means they milk the game for only the important parts, less emotions, less production time. Doesn’t look as graphically awesome as FFXIII. It might be a dissappointment. I’m hoping Mistwalker will become the new house for true RPG fans. The first two game were moderate, but they should progress, of course til our famed legends die…
Reporter-”tetsuya, I know you’re on your death bed and everything, but what are your thoughts about a final fantasy VII remake”
Tetsuya-”Dammit Square Enix! Why couldn’t you just approve it!”
@ Zelminar
Lol at that last part.
I agree with you, SE will most likely remake FFVII at some point. I just think they’re destined to botch it up.
I’m confused about why most agree to not make a FFVII remake. For the next generation of gamers, VERY few will likely go back to playing or replaying this “masterpiece” of a game, since there are a vast amount of games that are less graphically challenged, despite it’s incredible storyline and memorable characters. I believe a remake of this Final Fantasy to match standards of gaming consoles today will capture a new generation of fans. As for square enix “botching” up the original experience… if you truly feel that the company cannot surpass the experience of the Final Fantasy VII experience, than by all means don’t play it if/when it comes out and replay the original to your heart’s content. Square enix has been successful with its prequel Crisis Core and its sequel Advent Children in terms of graphics, environment, mood and theme, as well as creating a battle system appropriate for the series (in Crisis Core.) Option is the key element for fans… for those that do not want to ruin your original Final Fantasy experience, you have the option not to. The rest of us want to see Square Enix work their magic
Square Enix’s ‘Project X’, which was said in the past that it’ll “blow your socks off“, has been revealed to be a role-playing game today – the update coming once again from David Hoffman’s Twitter account.
“New milestone just rolled in on Project X,” Hoffman wrote in a status update. “Can’t wait to reveal the latest and greatest RPG to come outta Square Enix.”
“It’s suspected this RPG is to be a collaboration between Square Enix and another company. In the same update where Hoffman said our socks would be blown off, he also said: “The media thought SE and GPG was interesting – just wait!”
E3 is around the corner – less than three weeks away – so we’ll probably find out what exactly this ‘Project X’ is at the show.”
With the Project name being “Project X”, I don’t think this will be a FFVII remake but if I were to say that, I wonder where all these FFVII characters Tetsuya was mentioning went… Some people spectulate the X in “Project X” may be a reference to an Xbox exclusive, or maybe a FFX HD remake. Afterall it’s not FFVII’s 10th anniversary. It’s 13 years old…. But just maybe that’s referencing to the recent release of FFXIII????? OMG my head is going to explode. David hoffman wants the announcment before E3. Keep an eye on kotaku.com I’m sure it’ll be their ASAP.
Let’s all pray it’s not some “Sequel” ESPECIALLY with these recent realtime battlesystems… Just horrible. I still believe a FFVII remake is possible here. I understand they could botch the emotions captured by the game. But one thing is clear, it would take alot of idiots to botch the story being they already have the story and layout of the game. We would just have to worry about the graphics (Im not to worried about that) and maybe the music. Nobuo Uematsu is currently working with final fantasy xiv. With as much experience he has, it shouldn’t be to hard for square enix to hire him forFFVII remake.
We can only hope. If it’s not a FFVII remake with the standard battle system… I don’t think Incan be faithful to SE any longer…
Project X will most likely be an Xbox 360 rpg, hence the “X”, with no ties to Final Fantasy since it’s not coming from Squeenix’s Japan division.
Being SE just bought Eidos and I’m sure they are looking to evolve in the western market and seek new opportunities. Seeing that tetsuya nomura himself hasn’t referred to his specal announcement as “Project X”, I feel SDR may be correct. Being America, most gaming households by reports own an xbox360, (Versus japan being PS3) I could see the varaible “X” could resemble an Xbox360 exclusive title. (possibly Natal… Unlikely) But some would like to imagine a Xenogears remake…. (I would hate for a western company to perform that kind of reminasance…) At this point… I’m still determined to be in denial and believe a FFVII remake will be announced this year by tetsuya nomura or the core group… They are done with ffxiii and apparently are givng a helping hand with versus now. But I feel that is when it may be announced. (Final Fantasy VII remake that is… Honestly I wouldn’t mind having a xenogears remake either.)
All in all, I don’t believe this will be our Final Fantasy VII remake…. Nor do I believe it’ll be something worth holding your breathe for. But just maybe, JUST maybe! Tetsuya Nomura may give more hint to this “Special Announcement” of his during E3? We will continue to wait…
STD I love you!! <3
Dungeon Siege III… Really…
Square Enix…. I give up on you……… **** you. Last thing I’ll wait for is this Tetsuya Nomura “Special Announcment” This may be your last chance.
Contadicting statement,,, I know. xD
In your article you said square shouldnt listen to the fanboys, but in the latter half of your article you certainly seem like a ffvii fanboy to me. Also, if what was so great for was the story then why WOULDNT a remake be amazing? the battle system might have small changes, but the story would remain the same. So whats the problem?
@Conviction
“the battle system might have small changes” you say? Have you heard what SE has been saying about rpgs lately? Stuff like the ‘west doesn’t like turn based rpgs’ makes me think they aren’t too keen on keeping the same battle system for 7 in a remake. And maybe I am a bit of a FFVII fanboy, but hopefully I’m the type of fanboy SE will listen to and leave FFVII alone.
